1. Book Your Travel Ticket

It’s one of the first big steps in preparing for your journey to Germany.

2. Find accommodation 

Finding a place to stay is one of the most important aspects of settling into life in Germany. As an international student, you typically have two main choices: student dorms or private apartments.

University-run dormitories are the most affordable option, but spots are limited, so apply as soon as you're accepted into the university. Many student unions offer dorms. You can use the DAAD Accommodation Finder to help. 

If dorms aren’t available or you prefer more independence, consider private accommodation, either a shared flat to split costs or a private apartment if you’re okay with higher rent. For those wanting to find housing after arrival, temporary accommodation like a hostel or hotel near campus is a practical short-term solution.

3. Get Your ISIC Student Card

The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is important for any international student. With this card, you’ll enjoy discounts on travel, insurance, and lifestyle services across 133 countries. You're eligible to apply if you’re enrolled as a full-time student (12+ weeks of study per year). 

The card is affordable, ranging from €4 to €25, and it’s a smart investment for students who want to save on travel and daily expenses. To apply, you’ll need to submit a recent passport-sized photo, proof of full-time student status, and a copy of your ID. Once you have your ISIC card, you’ll be ready to save on everything from transportation to entertainment

4. Download Necessary Apps

In today's tech-savvy world, your smartphone will be your best friend when navigating a new country. Here are some apps you’ll want to download before heading to Germany: 

• For managing money, TransferWise is excellent for international transfers, and Number26 (now N26) lets you open a German bank account online.
• DBahn Navigator helps book and track public transport, while Google Maps is essential for navigation.
• Google Translate and Duolingo will come in handy to bridge the language gap.
