How to Apply for a Master’s Degree in Germany – Requirements for International Students

If you're planning to pursue your higher education abroad, Germany is likely already on your radar for a good reason. Known for its globally recognized universities, excellent academic standards, and low or no tuition fees, Germany has become one of the most sought-after destinations for international students, especially those eyeing a Master’s degree.

While the opportunities are promising, the application process can feel a little overwhelming. Let’s walk you through what it takes to apply for a Master’s degree in Germany in this post.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a Master’s program in Germany, most public universities require a 4-year bachelor's degree with at least a 7.5 CGPA.
If your CGPA is slightly lower, don’t worry, private universities offer equally good programs, although they usually come with tuition fees and may extend to three years.

You'll also need to demonstrate your English proficiency. Most universities accept an IELTS score of 6.5 or above.

Key Application Documents

Once you’ve shortlisted your course and university, the next step is preparing your documents. Here’s a quick checklist:

Academic Marksheets
This includes your 10th, 12th, and bachelor's marksheets, both individual and consolidated, as well as a provisional certificate.

Letter of Recommendation (LOR)
Usually, German universities require three LORs. If you’re a fresher, you can obtain all three of them from your professors. Working professionals should submit two academic and one work-related LOR.

Statement of Purpose (SOP):
Statement of purpose, or what is called a Letter of Motivation in Germany admission terms, is a place for you to spotlight your profile. The formal essay should explain your academic journey, professional endeavors, goals, and why you chose Germany for your Master's.

Resume/CV:
Lebenslauf, which is German for Resume or CV. German universities often prefer the Europass or tabular format. Keep your Resume concise between 1–2 pages.

APS Certificate:
APS certificate serves as a verification of your academic qualifications, ensuring that your degree and transcripts meet the standards required for university admission in Germany. It is a mandatory document for international students aiming to study in Germany from countries like India, China, and Vietnam.

Blocked Account:

A German Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) is a specific type of bank account required for international students, job seekers, or individuals intending to reside in Germany. It serves as proof of sufficient financial means, demonstrating that you can support yourself throughout your stay in the country, and is a necessary part of the visa application process.
You’ll need about €11,208 (roughly 12 lakh INR) in a German bank account to prove you can support yourself.

VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation)Needed when applying via Uni-Assist to validate your academic background.

Besides these documents, you would require your Passport, English proficiency scores, and a work experience letter (if applicable) to complete your Germany application.

Do note: Requirements may vary by university, so always check the university's official site before pressing the apply button.
